PTA: Computer Education

Computers are taught to 2nd-5th grades, with 1st graders receiving six weeks of instruction toward the end of the school year.

Second graders are introduced to keyboarding by learning about the home row keys and proper typing position. Third through fifth graders usually spend the first ten minutes of class building and practicing their typing skills in a typing program. Proper form and accuracy are emphasized over speed so that good habits are developed early. Students learn to use Microsoft Word to type paragraphs, stories, poems, letters, posters, and more. All students are introduced to more editing and formatting tools as they progress.

Students are introduced to PowerPoint using templates for simple animal reports in second grade and usually produce at least one presentation or book using the program each year. Fourth and fifth graders learn to make a presentation including backgrounds, transitions, clip art, and animations. Microsoft Excel is introduced in third grade as students learn to make graphs using the chart wizard. Fourth and fifth graders also learn about using formulas in Excel as well as sorting and filtering data.

In addition to learning software, the Internet is used for research as well as for virtual fieldtrips, simulations, and educational games. Students learn how to perform keyword searches and evaluate websites. The websites we visit in the lab can be found, and visited from home at http://montclairlab.pbworks.com

With the exception of basic keyboarding practice, an effort is made to teach all computer skills by doing projects that integrate content curriculum that students are currently learning in their classrooms.
